چکیده

Traditional MAC protocols used in ad hoc networks employ omnidirectional antennas. Recently, directional antennas have emerged as an alternative due to their capability of spatial reuse, low probability of detection, robustness to jamming, and other beneficial features. In this paper, we conducted a comparison study of existing directional and omnidirectional MAC protocols by contrasting their features and evaluating their performance under various network load and topology. Specifically we presented rationale for the better performance of some directional antenna based MAC protocols by using the metric of effective spatial reuse, which is also evidenced by the simulation study.

Evaluation of a BIBD Based Directional MAC Protocol for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

The use of directional antennas in wireless ad hoc networks can significantly improve global performance due to a high spatial channel reuse. Nevertheless, its introduction poses new location dependent problems related to the MAC protocol. In this paper, the Balanced Incomplete Block Design theory has been exploited to develop a new MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks using directional ant...

Medium Access Control Protocols using Directional Antennas in Ad Hoc Networks

Using directional antennas can be beneficial for wireless ad hoc networks consisting of a collection of wireless hosts. To best utilize directional antennas, a suitable Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol must be designed. Current MAC protocols, such as the IEEE 802.11 standard, do not benefit when using directional antennas, because these protocols have been designed for omnidirectional anten...

Performance Evaluation of Mac Protocols for Ad-hoc Networks Using Directional Antenna

An Ad-hoc network is a dynamic network farmed on demand by a group of nodes without any pre-existing network infrastructure. Self configurability and easy deployment feature of the Mobile Ad-hoc network (MANET) resulted in numerous applications in modern era. An efficient and effective medium access control (MAC) protocol is essential in ad-hoc network for proper sharing of channel. The omnidir...

Power-controlled medium access for ad hoc networks with directional antennas

Directional antennas have the potential to significantly improve the throughput of a wireless ad hoc network. At the same time, energy consumption can be considerably reduced if the network implements per-packet transmission power control. Typical MAC protocols for ad hoc networks (e.g., the IEEE 802.11 Ad Hoc mode) were designed for wireless devices with omnidirectional antennas. When used wit...

LODMAC: Location Oriented Directional MAC protocol for FANETs

Flying Ad Hoc Network (FANET) is a novel mobile ad hoc network type where the communicating nodes are Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). FANETs promise many new ways for both civilian and military applications. Today, traditional omnidirectional antennas are deployed on UAV nodes which result in reduced spatial reuse and limited network capacity. Alternatively, deployment of directional antennas ...
